Aromatherapy How Tos > Aromatherapy Is Not About The Scent

Tiny flower petals, the bark of a majestic tree, short stubby needles, the droplets released from the peel of a citrus fruit- their scent is a gift. Deep within that odoriferous molecule called scent, there is power.
The power to heal.

We benefit psychologically just from pleasant smells, whether they are synthetic or authentic essential oils. Hopefully the pleasant smell is associated with a pleasant memory because the sense of smell is the strongest memory trigger. Maybe this contributed to the belief that aromatherapy is just about the scent or aroma.

Essential oils are made up of very complex chemical structures that have the ability to promote healing in the body, mind and also the spirit. Synthetic fragrances are not able to produce the same therapeutic effects as high quality essential oils. For instance, the smell of lavender has been synthesized and made into perfumes and fragrance oils which are added to candles and cosmetics. The essential oil of lavender smells quite different from the faux lavender.

The essential oil of lavender can brag about its ability to heal minor burns, cuts and scratches because of its chemical structure. The body absorbs the molecules of the essential oils through topical application or through the olfactory system, just by inhaling. Essential oils are usually diluted when applied topically or added to the bath water. Their healing effects are felt even when they have been diluted to the point where there is very little smell.

The Four P's of Essential Oils ( how they work on the body)

• Physiologically
• Psychologically
• Pharmacologically
• Psychic ( Intuitive or Spiritually)

Many essential oils may share the same healing properties but have different aromas allowing us to choose the scent we are attracted to. The chemical characteristics of the essential oils are the deterniming factor which directs the healing effects, not the smell of the oil. Be aware that even though a product says it is "Aromatherapy" , which is an abused marketing word, it might not contain any essential oils at all.

Real aromatherapy is the use of essential oils to restore harmony and balance to the mind, body and spirit.
